Apicoectomy (Endodontic Surgery)
Surgical Endodontic treatment is performed when inflammation or infection persists in the bony area around the end of the root after non-surgical or conventional endodontic treatment or retreatment, or when there is no other way to access the area because of blockages in the canal. For some patients considering retreatment, endodontic surgical treatment may be the best solution. A painless incision is made near the end of the root that allows us to directly view and seal the roots tip. Occasionally endodontic surgery is recommended in conjunction with non-surgical retreatment.
Benefits of surgical endodontic treatment include:
- The tooth is retained, resulting in a healthier oral condition.
- Eliminates the need for more expensive prosthetic (artificial) replacements.
- Can prevent the disassembly of existing restorations and the need to remake crowns or bridges.
Surgical endodontic treatment can be performed on any tooth as long as the tooth is periodontally sound (the gum condition is healthy) and restorable (there is enough healthy tooth structure remaining to warrant reconstruction of the tooth). Treatment is generally performed in a single appointment in the dental chair using local anesthetic.
